Year 1
Welcome to Year 1
This is a very exciting year in school as children enter Key Stage One and continue with their creative learning journey. Our teachers in Year 1 are: Miss Sparkes (1LS), Mrs Parish (1AP) and Miss Barton and Miss Pearce (1BP).
Whilst children inspire and drive their learning forward throughout the year, we ensure that all key learning objectives are covered in a variety of engaging ways. Please have a look at our curriculum map to see what we are covering.
If you have any concerns regarding your child, please feel free to contact your class teacher through the Arbor App. If you feel that the matter has not been resolved please contact Miss Sparkes, who is the year group and key stage leader.
Welcome to Summer Term 2025
Our Topic: This half-term, our topic is ‘Castles and Crowns’. During our topic we will be discussing the questions:
‘If you were the King for the day, what rules would you put in place and why?’
and
‘What role would you like in the castle and why?’
In History, we will be learning about King Charles III and the Royal Family. We will be investigating who the King is, where he lives and the different roles he has. We will also be learning about famous UK castles and where they are located. We will find out about the different features of a castle and how they kept people safe. We are very excited to visit Warwick Castle and find out what it was like to live there.
In Geography, we have been learning all about our local area. This term we will begin to locate the capital cities of the UK – London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast-on a map and find out about the 4 compass points. We will then explore London further by using maps to identify the physical and human features that can be found there. We will also learn to describe the similarities and differences between London and Redditch.
Welcome to Spring Term 2025
Our Topic: This half term, our topic is ‘Toy town’. During our topic we will be discussing the question ‘How have toys changed over the years?’ Would we prefer modern toys or our Grandparents' toys? and 'What makes Redditch a great town?'
Over the term we will be learning about toys from the past and how they compare with our families. In History, we will be investigating how toys have changed over time and when toys were invented. We will be comparing toys from the past in our own lives and sharing what toys we like to play with. We will also be finding out about what toys our family members played with when they were young, so get ready to share your favourite toys parents and grandparents!
WELCOME TO THE AUTUMN TERM!
We are all very excited about our new topic for Autumn 2024:
Who am I?
This half term, we will be discussing the questions: 'Are all families the same?' and 'Where is my school?'
We will be learning all about ourselves and our families. We will be exploring how all families are different and how family members are related to each other by creating family trees. We will then be creating timelines of our lives and learning the meaning of 'past, present and future'.
In Geography, we will be finding out about where our school is and what Redditch is like to live in. We will be going on a walk to explore our local area and spot human and physical features in our local environment.
Reading Books:
A shared reading book will be sent home on a Monday. Little Wandle books will be sent home on a Thursday, which the children have been busy practicing all week. Both books will then need to be returned to school on a Monday. It is essential that the Little Wandle books are back by Monday so they can be used by other children in school on Tuesday. If the books are not returned, then your child will not be able to take a new book home.
Make sure you check our 'Learning Journey' tab to find out what we have been getting up to so far!
